During my artist residency at NES Artist Residency in Skagastrond, Iceland, I collaborated with the 17-year-old, Elvis worshipping, musician, Omar Gudmundsson to create a music video of his first love song. The original intention for my stay at NES was to document the life and ideas of Hallbjörn Hjartarson, famously known as the “Icelandic Cowboy”. Omar’s understanding of the American Music industry has been filtered through fabled images and stories from the Internet as well as his Uncle’s aggrandized story of traveling to Nashville, TN to record an album and launch his professional career. In 2008, Omar drove to Reykjavik, in an attempt to launch his music career as a contestant on the Icelandic Idol TV series, where he made it to the second round. This video takes the form of a “Behind the Scenes” look into Omar’s perceptions of the American music industry from far off in the periphery of the music world.
